CHAPTER 12

It took me a few minutes to figure out why I was dizzy. The orb seemed to suck the energy right out of me, and I was pretty sure if I had been human, I would already have dropped to the floor. My temples throbbed as pain radiated in my skull. It had been years since I had a migraine. That bitch was going to pay for making my temples feel like they had a jackhammer inside, while my stomach flipped like a fish out of water.

I swayed on my feet before Eve’s voice echoed around the room and she rushed down the steps. Her gaze moved around the space as she set down the large black bag she brought with her. She was wearing the same cream sweater and blue jeans she had on in the store, but she had removed her apron. “Where is Hunter?”

“He alerted the police there was a bomb threat. They are quietly removing the people that are safe to travel.”

I tipped my chin toward the glowing orb. “Do you know what this thing is?”

Eve circled around me with her eyes on the pulsing globe. “No. I have never seen anything like this, but I called Grayson. He will be here in a moment. You just need to stay still.”

“Okay,” I whispered.

My eyes closed before Eve grabbed my shoulder. “That’s easier said than done. You look like you are about to pass out?”

“The orb is sucking my energy from me. I haven’t felt this nauseous since my first trimester of pregnancy.”

“Don’t throw up. If you drop that thing, we are dead. If Dagna was as cocky as you said, then she wasn’t lying about this thing hitting atomic proportions.”

“Trust me, I believe her.”

Eve held her hands over the orb, and I felt a slight wave of energy go through me. “Damn.”

“What is it?” I asked, not really wanting the answer.

Eve tapped her knuckle on her lip. “It’s like a magical Rubik’s cube with a plutonium center. I can’t deactivate the bomb without getting through the layers of protection she placed around it. It’s sad, but I have to admire her ingenuity. It’s unfortunate she turned dark. This magic is brilliant.”

Of course, the dark witch had to be smart. I wouldn’t have fallen for her trap otherwise. Still, she couldn’t have known I would find her here. She may have had that bomb here for anyone who tried to stop her, or she had planned to bring this building down by using a human. None of the scenarios were good, and I was relieved I had intercepted the orb before she killed hundreds of people.

“Can you start working on the outer protections? I need this thing deactivated soon. I’m not lying when I say I am asleep on my feet.”

Eve placed her hands over mine and her eyes flickered with blue fire as she concentrated on the orb. It pulsed brightly before she snatched her hands away. “Dagna is smart. This has a double latch system.
